In a way this is my debut album. Having a record for sale on all platforms solidifies my place as a professional artist & shows I believe in my self & my work. But before I could attain this external validation, I had to validate myself & my art. I discovered that the way to do this was to go through the process of completing a body of work, start to finish. I wrote every single one of these songs from a feeling, using what I had – my instruments, my voice, & my phone. I participated in every mastering session, making sure the final soundscape felt natural & beautiful. I went back & forth with TuneCore for 3 weeks until the distribution was set up. But before all that even happened, I spent years listening to these songs & loving them as I developed my philosophy for sharing them.
See, for a long time I didn’t think they were good enough by other people’s standards. Before I even gave the world a chance to decide, I decided they wouldn’t approve. But in my heart, I loved these songs just as they are. And even though I still want to rework them with more resources, I appreciate the fact that I did the best I could with what I did have.
It took 8 years to solve my own riddle – how do I release music professionally without a budget & backing? The answer is Evolution, 8 songs that I took from 8 different projects & compiled into one record so the world could start to see my vision – Zen Desire, singer-songwriter & musician, heartfelt writer & artist.
Now that it’s out, I finally feel like I can focus on the next things. And that’s how life is, whether it’s music projects or chapters we turn the page on. We owe it to ourselves & our futures to release things we once held on to, so we can free our hands for what’s next. It’s hard to focus on what’s in front of you when you’re looking at what’s behind you.
